And for all of you who contributed to PARSA, following my pre-Christmas appeal - good news!!!

The New York Times reports that the Afg government has appointed a new director of orphanages, and that some good changes are taking place.

He has travelled to four remote orphanages and fired the cooks and adminstrators who were stealing all the food and blankets, and although he's running into some problems with corrupt officialdom etc., the word is that the Kabul orphanages are MUCH improved.

This is really wonderful news - at least there is a responsive official in charge of the orphanages now, so you can be extra certain that any donations you make will go to and stay with the children rather than find their way into a bureaucrat's pocket.

Thank You to the New York Times for this story!

Meanwhile, here's a little more informationa about Parsa for those who are interested, especially interesting is this commentary written by Marnie for CNN. I completely agree with what she says.

And here is the website for Parsa:

Parsa stands for Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Services of Afghanistan. It's a small Red Crescent affiliated charity that has worked with war wounded, and has a sterling reputation in Afghanistan, which is why the Taliban has never bombed the place.

I too vouch for this group after a reporting trip there a few years ago, where I saw first hand how this small group of individuals was making an outsize difference to the kids, and the widows. People like Marnie and Yasin and Mr. Hashemi work away in obscurity at a micro level, doing a very grassroots type of thing that directly benefits each and every individual they come in contact with. I think sometimes it'd be a bit dispiriting, so I hope your good wishes and donations lent a bit of support not just to the kids but to these individuals this Christmas.
